How Your Circadian Rhythm Impacts Your Productivity
Have you ever noticed that you feel energized or drowsy around the same times every day? That’s not random—it’s your circadian rhythm at work.
Some people are most productive in the morning, while others hit their stride later in the evening. Knowing when your energy naturally peaks can help you maximize creativity, productivity, and focus.
What Is the Circadian Rhythm?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, “Your circadian rhythm is basically a 24-hour internal clock that is running in the background of your brain and cycles between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals. It’s also known as your sleep/wake cycle.”
Your circadian rhythm is what tells you when it’s time to rest and when you’re at your sharpest.
Why It Matters for Leaders
For me, my peak creativity hits between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. That’s when my brain is firing on all cylinders—so I schedule high-focus tasks like:
-
Recording podcast episodes.
-
Tackling accounting work.
-
Leading important meetings.
This ensures I’m using my best energy on the tasks that demand the most brainpower.
As leaders, we often think of creativity as something for artists. But in reality, creativity is simply problem-solving and innovation—using what you know in a new way. And that’s something every leader needs.
How to Leverage Your Rhythm
If you can identify your natural rhythm, you’ll:
-
Get more done in less time.
-
Bring greater creativity to problem-solving.
-
Reduce stress by working with your energy instead of against it.
So, pay attention to your body. Notice when you feel most alert, and schedule your toughest or most creative work during those times. If your current rhythm isn’t working for you, start adjusting small habits—like bedtime, light exposure, or caffeine use—to reset your cycle.
When you align your work with your circadian rhythm, you’ll lead with more clarity, energy, and effectiveness every single day.
