AWESOMENESS!!! Here’s my question. Can you share your favorite success stories of people that have been inspired by your book?
Good one, Lily. I’d be happy to share my story.
Ha ha. Yeah, I wish!
Ask Chris to discuss the “Myth of start-up failures.” Many start-ups are marked as failures when the owner simply shifted focus and changed the business model – Bill’s lawn care ends and Bill’s mulching service begins. It’s not a true failure, but it hits the statistics as such.
How important is a good logo and brand strategy when you are starting a business? How do you do this on a limited budget?
What is the most significant hurdle for start-ups and how have you seen entrepreneurs overcome it?
Do you feel that the number of entrepreneurs has increased dramatically with the internet boom or have they always been there, under the radar?
Any ideas for start ups for those with more capital to invest? $1,000? $10,000?
When starting up with little cash, what is the best form of advertising?
Guerrilla Marketing = answer 100% of the time.
GM is a great book.
If you have a handful of options, how do you pick one and go for it?
This won’t really work with any industry, will it?
What industries / areas will this work best?
No way! I love that book! After months (years?) of hemming and hawing about “doing my own thing,” I read that book in September and it has galvanized me into action. My wife and I set aside a night for a “Business Planning Summit” to decide the parameters of what we wanted our business to look like. Then, we went through a list of 25 business ideas we had generated while reading the book. We’ve narrowed it down to four and are digging in deeper to pick The One Thing To Focus On.
But you asked for questions!
What do you say to people that are tired for working for someone else, but feel like they don’t have anything they’re passionate about? I have a friend who is in sales and feels like he could sell anything, but doesn’t have a product or service he’s excited about.
What are the most common mistakes people make in the first 6-12 months of their startup? And how do I avoid them?
If your side startup isn’t generating much revenue, how long do you stick with it before moving on to try something else?
Also, please extend a general thanks. It was the perfect book for where I was at. Dave’s teachings laid the foundation and the belief that I could do it; Chris’s book got me off the couch.
Read Quitter by Jon Acuff. It is the “do my own thing without turning it into a bottomless pit of despair” handbook.
It’s sitting on my bedside table as I type. 🙂 Thanks!
What is a reasonable amount of time to spend in learning a process you need to implement, vs. hiring someone else to do it for you? In other words, when does time spent become ‘wasted time’?
How do you advise people to come up with the ideas that they can turn into income? In other words, what’s your recipe for an idea that’s worth trying to parlay into a revenue stream?
This comment is the same thought / problem I have – out of many ideas, it seems like none are profit worthy.
worth reading:
Your best chance for success is to do something your passionate about. A money making idea has more hurdles than the Summer Olympics. Without passion you will not get past them all.
Got a hundred bucks I can borrow? Ha ha ha!
Chris, thanks for asking!
Questions for Chris G.
1. What tool or resource would you recommend for those that KNOW they need to sell, but are needing to learn? Is it just by trial and error? Obviously following those that want to succeed is extremely helpful, but looking for specific tools, programs, books, etc. that help with this? Or is it simply getting out there and taking action to do it?
2. What are your top 3 advice tips for those starting out in finding their perfect blend of passion and earning income?
3. What podcasts, blogs and/or books do you receive encouragement, guidance, and/or info from?
I bought your book this past summer after hearing Dan Miller brag on it. Very anxious to read it. Looking forward to listening.

$100 for a start up – what about ongoing costs?
Haven’t read the book yet, so maybe it’s answered there. Just wondering 🙂
I’m starting a web design business. I’m sure that if I pay close attention to what my customers want and where the money is that I can turn this from not having any customers to a side gig to being my main job, but my wife is not convinced and thinks it’s too risky. Do you have any tips I can use to help her understand why I’m doing this and re-assure her that it’s the right thing to do?
Love the book, really inspirational and helpful,
Thanks,
Edwin
I don’t know if I’ve gotten this in on time, but: what ways have you used to create leads and new clients for your startups?
With a small amount of start up money what should the first thing be that you do? Put up a website? Get a subscribers list? Create a small product? Or market your services for example if you are a teacher as I am?
Do you skimp on quality until you gain better profits?
As I start up my venture, what is the ideal moment when I can opt for first hire? What should be the qualities expected from such resource?
Love this stuff guys! I love growing and stretching. Will be a world leader someday. God lit a fire in my soul. Seriously, no one else could have. See you sooner than later!
