3 Ways To Sharpen Your Axe

Today, we as a society are busier than we ever have been. So if you’re feeling a wee bit tired, you’re not alone. Most leaders I meet with are just flat worn out. They want their businesses to grow, but they don’t know what to do.

Therefore, they find themselves sitting around waiting for the “next thing” to happen. In the last EntreLeadership – Chris LoCurto, I had two separate owners who were no longer excited about running their businesses. It happens. It’s not uncommon nowadays for people to feel like they have no incentive to do anything more…or new.

I will tell you that being in this place in life is dangerous. Why? Because it’s extremely difficult to get out of. In fact, it makes it even more difficult to do daily tasks when you have no energy, no excitement. Ecclesiastes 10:10 says, “If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but wisdom brings success.”

What’s that saying? If you don’t get wiser and sharpen your edge, you’re going to spend a lot of time just trying to accomplish the same menial tasks. So what do you do? Here are three things to get you started:

  • Read – In Whatchya Readin’? I wrote: “Why is it a must to be reading? Because, as we say in EntreLeadership, ‘Your capacity, intelligence, education, character, ability, and vision are limiting your organization.’ So to the extent that you are putting good solid growth stuff into you, you’re growing. To the extent that you’re not…you’re not! It’s really up to you to make the decision as to how much you want to increase your intelligence, or your vision.”
  • Meet – Spend time with people you look up to. Find some folks who know more, are doing more and are more successful than you. You may have surrounded yourself with people who aren’t helping you grow. They’re bringing you more negativity than anything. Instead, spend some time with people who are going to pour wisdom and knowledge into your life. And it wouldn’t be bad at all if they are strong enough to call you out on your junk.
  • Pray – Spend time talking with the One who knows it all. Focus a part of your day asking God what it is that He wants you to do each day. What is it that He wants you to do with your business or your leadership? James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

As Abraham Lincoln once said. “If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I would spend six hours sharpening my axe.”
