Personality Styles (Updated 2024)

If you know me well at all, you know that I am crazy about understanding personality styles. If you’ve ever given someone direction on something and they just stand there looking at you with the deer-in-the-headlights look, then you probably think to yourself, “I know this person is not dumb, why don’t they get what I’m saying?”

Here’s the kicker: often, the disconnect isn’t because the other person doesn’t get it—it’s because we’re not communicating in a way that they can understand. We give information the same way we receive information. But what if the key to effective communication isn’t about speaking our language louder, but leaning into theirs?

Take my story, for instance. About eight years ago, I brought on board a phenomenal team member for what I would call an ‘admin on steroids’ role. Despite her talents, every time I handed off a project, she’d return within minutes puzzled. It hit me then—after reviewing her DISC profile—that the fault lay with me. I wasn’t giving her what she needed: clear, detailed instructions tailored to her processing style.

This epiphany wasn’t just about improving workflow; it was a fundamental shift in my leadership approach. By understanding and adapting to her High C need for details, I transformed not just her productivity but our entire dynamic.

This concept extends beyond the office. It impacts your interactions with family, friends, and even customers. If you’re not seeing the importance yet, you might be missing out on a critical tool for both personal and professional relationships.

How You Can Use DISC

to Enhance Communication

  • Identify the Styles

First up, get to know the DISC styles. D for Dominance, I for Influence, S for Stability, C for Cautiousness. Each has unique communication needs.

  • Tailor Your Approach

Adapt your communication to match the listener’s style. For a High D, be direct and to the point. For a High I, keep it lively and engaging. A High S will appreciate your supportive and patient tone, while a High C will value detailed, precise information.

  • Train Your Team

Don’t stop with just you. Encourage your team to learn and use DISC. It’s a game-changer for internal dynamics and productivity.

  • Continuous Learning

Regularly revisit and refine your understanding of DISC. People evolve, and so should your communication strategies.
