Welcome to The Chris LoCurto Show where we discuss leadership and life and discover that business is what you do, not who you are.
Welcome to the show, folks. I hope you're having a fabulous day wherever you are.
Today we are going to dive into four unexpected questions that every leader needs to be asking themselves and they need to probably be asking their team as well.
This would be good for you to dig in with your leaders and if possible, dig in with your team as well because this will reveal a lot of what I believe is good quality information that will help you to make some great decisions moving forward.
So definitely something that as many people in your team as you can get to answer this with quality information, then I think this will help you to make some great decisions.
So now, these are not your typical leadership questions. I could tell you that. These are truly thought provoking. They are offbeat.
They're, they're probably questions you've never asked yourself before, but they are designed to challenge you. They're designed to challenge your assumptions.
They're designed to challenge your thinking all about your leadership.
Question 1: "What am I pretending not to know?" (00:01:45)
So we're just going to jump right into question number one. So I'm hoping you're ready because this is something that I want you to take super seriously. I want you to really ask yourself this question.
I don't want you to hide from this. I want you to be vulnerable. With you, you don't have to share your answers. You don't have to show your scratch paper to anybody.
Only us older folks know what I just said.
But I really, really want you to ask this question and dig into truth. If you're not in a place where right now you can ask this question, then write it down or take the get to the show notes and make sure that you're asking these questions of yourself.
The first question is, what am I pretending not to know? What am I pretending not to know?
This is an incredibly difficult question that a lot of leaders avoid. This is something that can get to some really hard truths, right? This can get you facing some, some really hard truths.
It causes you to kind of uncover blind spots. Now, here's the difficulty with this.
If you're not able to be vulnerable with you, if you're struggling with pride, then I can tell you this is probably not going to be a question that you answer to any great depth or the areas that you don't want to look at are probably going to be areas that you do not uncover with this question.
So that's why I'm saying please for you allow yourself to get vulnerable on this. You don't have to tell anybody, you don't have to share it. But you need to be self aware.
You need to be able to recognize that this is an area or areas that you've been ignoring. Maybe you've been downplaying it. And we can start with something simple like maybe you're pretending not to know that your team's morale is low, right?
Maybe that's something that you're just not being honest with yourself about. Even though you see signs, even though you can see that there's problems, it's something you're just not willing to recognize in the moment.
You need to, you need to ask the question, is it low? If so, you know, because I'm seeing signs. What are the signs? Why is this happening? How can I address this and how can I lead to great breakthroughs?
But the first thing you have to be is incredibly self aware. This is happening. I see it happening. I can't hide from this. I can't pretend that I don't know that this is happening.
So why do people tend to shy away? Well, it could be for many reasons. Why do I, why do I not be honest with myself? It could be for many reasons. It could because there's a fear of conflict.
You know, a lot of leaders are going to shy away from tough conversations or difficult conversations that are, that are going to surely lead to tension, surely going to lead to discomfort.
They tell themselves that they avoid this, then maybe it's going to go away over time. It's not going anywhere. This is something that you need to deal with. Another reason would be a desire for control.
You know, maybe facing the hard truths causes you to feel out of control. Maybe admitting that there are certain mistakes going on or there's uncertainty happening in your team or in your business can cause you to feel out of control.
It's another reason why people just will not ask this question, not face it. Another one, and this is a tough one, is overconfidence. Oh, there's so many times that I wish that I could get a leader to recognize how much they assume they have all the answers.
I don't see it a ton. I don't see it in a lot of people. But every now and then you will have leaders who absolutely struggle to realize they don't have all the answers. They downplay stuff, they sabotage things.
You know, they try and make. If anything is going against the thing that they're controlling or the style or way that they like to do things, then what you'll see is you'll see this big wall get put up.
You know, that thing, that process, that person, that whatever, all of a sudden becomes bad. Why? Because of their pride. Now, I said overconfidence, but I'm going to say pride.
The pride that says, I have the answers. This, it needs to go my way. I'm the one who's got all the right stuff. Then ask yourself this question. If that is true, is everything within your control running a hundred percent?
Is everything within your control going incredibly well? The answer, usually when somebody is stuck in pride is usually no because of so and so. No because of this thing over here.
It's always a blame shift to something else, right? There's usually it's somebody else's problem, it's something else. It's always something else, right?
Pride is always going to lead to that. Ask yourself the question, is that something you're struggling with?
Do you believe you have the answers? And again, you might be telling yourself, no, that's not me at all.
Well, how do you respond when new information shows problems, shows issues, shows you're struggling with something, right? Are you pretending not to know that this is an area that you struggle with?
You know, another reason why people don't ask a question like this or don't dig into something like this is it requires them to be vulnerable.
That it, it requires them to be something that they perceive as weak. And that's just ridiculous. Weakness is not asking yourself this question. Weakness is not being able to dig deep on this and, you know, get to truth.
Strength is actually going, huh, let me ask this, let me dig in, let me find truth. Let me get to what's holding me back, and then let me figure out how to fix this.
What if we don't face hard truths? What is the cost of not facing the hard truths? Well, I can tell you your blind spot that already exists is going to grow. It's going to get worse.
It's going to cause, you know, because other people most likely see it, there's a good chance that people do see that this is an area you're struggling in. So it's going to erode trust, right?
It's going to erode effectiveness with your leaders, with your team, with your family, with whoever.
Another thing is, it can create a lot of misalignment inside of your company, inside of your team, inside of your family. For if we're going to avoid something, then we're going to be unclear. People are going to be unclear.
We're not going to be on the same page. It's going to create unresolved issues, possibly unresolved conflict. Right?
It may cause team members to lose focus, lose motivation because they, they see something, but nothing is being done about it. Right? It may cause us to miss opportunities.
You know, for me, I, I think constructive feedback, not somebody attacking you, not somebody who's trying to take you down. But constructive feedback gives you the opportunity to fix things and change things.
How can you lead people to fixing and changing themselves if you can't receive that yourself? Right?
Another thing is, is that it can create a culture of silence. When leaders avoid hard truths, when they avoid blind spots, when they avoid getting to quality perspective about a struggle, they may have something they're downplaying.
Then what tends to happen is people just stop talking, people just stop giving information on things of depth, people stop pointing out problems, people stop trying to fix things, people stop worrying about important issues because what they've come to realize is we just can't face these things.
There's nothing we can do about it. So this is an important question for you to ask.
Is there anything that I am pretending not to know? What am I pretending not to know?
Question 2: "If I could solve only one problem in my business, what would it be?" (00:10:59)
Question number two. If I could solve only one problem in my business, what would it be?
Now this really, really helps us to focus on just one issue that might make a big difference. It might create massive ripple effects inside of the business, inside of all areas.
The question actually helps you to prioritize what truly matters inside of your business and it really helps you to avoid distractions.
So for example, if you could fix your sales process or maybe try and improve your communication, which would have the most significant long term impact, right?
What's the thing that could affect the business? The team, you, the client? What could help the most? So here's why we should be asking this question, right?
Here's some great benefits of asking the question. Number one is that it streamlines your focus when you ask, what is the one thing?
If there's just one thing I can fix, then it helps you to get really streamlined on whatever the thing is that needs to be fixed. Right now, it still exists, it's there, you know, it needs to be fixed, but you may not have put a heavy priority on it.
Now by asking the question, we're putting some serious focus to it. And the thing is, you know that there are other issues that need to be fixed.
But what if we knocked out one that takes away from all the other competing demands that you have as a leader? Right. Here's one more thing that we can knock out. The other thing is it drives alignment. Right. It might help align your team around a clear goal.
Right. Put us all in a laser focus. Let's go solve this. Let's make this thing happen. It can also eliminate distractions. That thing that needs to be fixed is probably causing distractions throughout your entire team.
So what does it look like to eliminate it, to get rid of it? So how do we kind of approach this question of asking, if I could only solve one problem in the business, what would it be?
First thing you need to do is you need to take time to analyze your business. You need to reflect on problems. You need to look at it through the negative lens.
No, we're not trying to look at positive things and pat ourselves on the back. We're trying to look at what are the biggest issues that we see inside of our business and then prioritize those things.
If I was to fix these, how big of a difference would it make inside of my company, inside of my team? Right?
Which one is going to make the biggest difference? So questions to ask. Is it a bottleneck in operations? Is there something that's happening in operations that's keeping team from executing things, salespeople from executing on sales?
You know, whatever it is, whatever type of business you run, team members from serving clients in a better way, Whatever it is, is it a bottleneck issue? Is it a lack of alignment?
Perhaps? Maybe we're not aligned. Maybe we haven't done a really good job teaching our team about our mission, our vision, our core values. And because we're not aligned, things are going in separate directions.
What we call the shotgun approach. I've got this team member focusing on this thing over here that doesn't have anything to do with this team member going over here in this direction. Right.
Or maybe we have silos that are separating out our team and causing us to actually lose productivity because we have people that are only focusing on their area or a different area that is not pointing us towards the same unified direction.
You know, it could be any of these. Maybe it's. Maybe it's low customer retention. Are we losing customers and we don't know why? Or maybe we do know why, but maybe it hasn't been important enough for us to solve right now. Right.
So make sure that you're getting your team's input. Make sure that you're involving your team to identify whatever the core issue is, because they're going to have good insight, right?
They're going to see things from a different perspective. They're going to see it from the things that they're, you know, whatever that issue is, how it affects their day to day, make sure that you evaluate the impact.
If we do this thing, how is it going to affect the company? Is it going to solve more problems? Right. Maybe. If we solve this one problem, does it end up solving other problems or does it create other problems?
It could do that as well, right? So consider what the ripple effects are to solving this one problem. So what are some examples?
I'm going to tell you right now, Your number one issue by far is lack of high levels of quality communication. That is a big issue. We see it all the time. I've been doing this for decades. Every single company that I have worked with, that's the number one thing coming in.
When I start working with a business or any of our team starts working with a business, the number one issue is lack of high levels of quality communication.
People don't understand how to communicate with each other. They don't understand how to lean in each other's direction. It just. It's chaotic.
And the crazy thing is, for all of you folks, all of you businesses that have been through StratPlan, we tend to ask a question on the first night which is, you know, rank your.
Rank your communication with your team. And then we get into the first day of working on communication and things, and what we find out is that usually they will rank it a seven or an eight.
And then we get into the next day and it's usually a two or three. They are stunned at how the communication actually is. They thought it was great. They're like, we like each other.
We talk a lot, but the communication is not that good. Another big example is accountability, folks. I cannot say it enough.
Accountability for some reason, for some reason is really difficult for leaders to focus on. And I'm not exactly sure why. I think maybe it's just people think it's going to be too tough.
And yet accountability makes things so much easier. It is something that we help every business coming in.
That's one of our major focuses, communication and then accountability.
The more accountability you have in place, the less struggles you have, the less team struggles you have, the less tough conversations you have to have in the long run, you'll have to have some on the front side, but the less team members that sit in a role for a year, two years, seven years that you know shouldn't be there in the first place.
Put the accountability in place and solve things. It kicks productivity up. It kicks your bottom line up. It's just amazing. Another example would be ineffective leadership or maybe poor decision making processes.
There are a lot of leaders. I'll go back to the pride issue. I shouldn't say a lot. There are a handful of leaders that struggle with gaining quality perspective. They struggle with realizing that they don't have all the answers.
They struggle with being vulnerable. And when you struggle with being vulnerable, what you tend to find is you are usually more ineffective as a leader and you probably make poor decisions. Right.
You probably don't make the best decisions. Let me say it that way.
Action Steps After Identifying the Problem (00:18:45)
So what can you do after you've identified the problem? Well, there's a couple of steps you should take. First, define what success looks like.
Clearly. Clearly articulate what solving this problem would look like. Write it down, discuss it with your team. What does the expected result look like if we solve this?
Number two, put together a plan. Develop a plan, outline actionable steps. Here's the things that we're going to do. Here's how we're going to address this.
You know, put some milestones in there, some, some goals in there. And then third, engage your team, Communicate with your team, get them on the same page.
Sell the vision, get them involved, treat them with dignity. You know, get their, you've already asked for their opinions and everything. Get their buy in. We're going to go solve this thing.
Get them involved with that solution. So if you can ask yourself the question, if I could just solve one thing, there's a ton of information for you to go. Knock that out, folks.
If you've been listening to me for any length of time, then you know the number one issue when it comes to business, when it comes to family, when it comes to friendships, is having a lack of high quality communication to make sure that you are absolutely winning in every aspect of your life.
It all starts with having great communication.
The best way to get that communication is to understand your personality style and to understand the personality style of the folks that you're spending the most time with, whether it be at work, whether it be at home.
The best way to do that is to go to chrislocurto.com/store and get your personality profile and personality profiles for your team today. Get it for your family members today.
As you go through that profile, you will be begin to see the greatest ways to communicate. Go to chrislocurto.com/store today.
Question 3: "What would my business look like if it were easy?" (00:20:47)
Now, question number three. And this is important, it's going to sound silly, but because so many people think business has to be so complicated.
But I want you to really focus on this. What would my business look like if it were easy? I know this really challenges the mindset that most people have that everything has to be difficult when it comes to business, right?
If it's going to be worthwhile, it's got to be difficult. Well, you got to lose that concept. You got to lose that mindset, right? This can spark such great thinking on your side on how to streamline, how to make things better, right?
What if there was just one complicated process that was draining time and energy from you, your leaders, your team, whatever it is, right? How could we make that process simpler without losing quality?
The goal isn't to make it simple or easy, just to make it easy. We want to still have quality, but how do we get complication out of it? Why does it matter? Why does asking this question matter?
Because the great thing is that it challenges complexity, right? There's so many leaders who unnecessarily overcomplicate the living daylights out of their business. I'm sorry, but it's true.
There's redundant processes, there's outdated systems, there's processes that are in place, but they haven't been optimized.
So people are either still not doing it correctly or people aren't even focusing on it at all. Right?
There's maybe goals or plans of accomplishing things, but we've never come alongside and put steps to it. So this really helps us to get complexity out of the business as much as we possibly can.
It encourages simplifying things. It doesn't have to be so difficult. What would it look like if we streamlined this?
What would it look like if we eliminated friction? Right. What if we could identify the path to least resistance, put that in place and make things easier? If we do this, then it unlocks creativity.
If we ask this question, it unlocks creativity. It causes us. If we're bringing other leaders involved and team members involved, you know, do this in your family, right? If we can ask this question, then people start imagining what an easy business looks like.
You know, leaders can start to really use their creativity to come up with opportunities that we could fix. We could change whatever things that they probably haven't even thought about before because, well, we've done it.
We've always done it this way. So get the creativity, get the complexity out, get things more Simple. So how does this question actually impact your business? Well, a great thing is that it can actually break old habits.
You know, we've always done it this way needs to go. We need to challenge some of the beliefs that we've had in the business for 10, 20, 30 years, whatever, right?
Or maybe it's just three years, but we need to break some of these old habits and we need to encourage people to question, why are things always done this way, right? Is there an easier way? Is there a better way?
Another thing is that it highlights bottlenecks, right?
It forces you to critically look at the very things that are slowing down you, your team, getting to clients faster, bottlenecks with vendors, whatever it is, it helps us to find unnecessary, difficult things and maybe knock those things out of the way.
It also can very well boost efficiency. So think of the bottom line. How much money are you spending to do what you're doing right now?
How much does it cost to do what you're doing right now? What if you can make it easier? Well, and you're going to find that whether it's systems, processes, decision making processes, whatever it is, it will actually create more efficiency.
More efficiency allows you to get more work done. More work done allows you to get more bottom line. So simplify so that you can boost efficiency.
Also another thing it does, when the team who's having to work on whatever process, whatever workflow, whatever the thing is that's now getting easier, now it's going to be less complex.
It drives team morale. It causes people to be less stressed out. It causes them to be more engaged in the process because they see that you're doing something to make their life easier as well.
So I'm gonna give you a download. The team will put this in the show notes. They will make all this happen. But I'm gonna just tell this to you right now, but you can go to the show notes and get this download to make it easier on yourself.
So first thing you need to do, right, this is what are we gonna do to make our business, you know, considerably easier, right?
The first thing you need to do is identify pain points. What are the most time consuming or stressful aspects of your business and what processes feel unnecessarily complicated.
Number two, simplify processes. So eliminate unnecessary steps in your processes and your workflows. Make sure that you're automating repetitive tasks wherever you possibly can.
Make sure that you're delegating properly. As we always say, delegate properly responsibilities to free up your time so that you can spend Time focused on strategic thinking.
Number three, focus on business drivers. What are the core things that are driving your business? What activities generate the most value for your business?
And focus resources on these key drivers while cutting out distractions.
Number four, empower the team, provide clear direction. Let me say the word clear again. Clear direction and authority to make decisions without micromanaging and offer tools and training that make their work easier and more effective.
And number five, please, please rethink your customer experience. Walk through your customer experience yourself. Make sure that you understand what it's like front to back.
Ask yourself the question, how can I make it easier for customers to engage, to buy, to interact with your business and also simplify your offerings so that you ensure that interactions are just seamless.
Right. So that download will be in our show notes. Make sure that you get it.
Question 4: "Who is not telling me the truth and why?" (00:27:39)
All right, Question number four that you have to ask yourself, I highly suggest that you ask yourself. This is a tough one as well. All of these are tough. I get it.
I understand who is not telling me the truth and why. So this is a very complicated question, especially depending upon where you are right now.
If you are healthy, if you are not struggling with pride, if you're not struggling with victim mentality, then this may be a really good question for you to ask and you may be able to get to really good information.
If you are struggling in those areas, then there's a really good chance. Your answer to this question is, well, I think it's everybody. Nobody's. Nobody's telling me the truth. Right? The thing is, is that we need to ask this question because it forces a leader to really evaluate the transparency that they are experiencing, that they are having themselves with their team. Right.
How's our communication? How's the health of our relationships? It really causes you to take a hard look at what you're giving, what you're doing.
And I'm not saying you need to go give every bit of yourself, but what if you're not being very transparent?
What if you're not communicating well?
You know, what if you're not spending time building any aspect of relationship inside of your team or at least with those that you work with closely on a daily basis, well, then you can't expect that people are going to feel like they can be as vulnerable with you. Right?
So if there's somebody on your team who's like holding back super important information, why, why would they.
You've got to start with this question, the sub question to question number four, which is, is there anything that I'm doing That's keeping them from being able to share that information, right?
Do they feel like they can't tell me the truth? Do they feel like they can't put themselves in a vulnerable situation and share this information with me, whatever it is, that's why we got to dig into the why piece.
If somebody's not telling me the truth, why are they not? And start with you. Start with you. What if it is you? Fix it. Do something about it. Get to self awareness, right?
If you feel like you have people that you can be vulnerable enough to ask them to tell you the truth, they may not, but maybe you can dig in and say, hey, guys, I feel like maybe there's something I'm doing that's keeping you from sharing information with me.
Do you feel that that's true? Is there something I'm doing? Is there some way I'm treating you? Is there some way I'm responding?
Whatever it is that will help you to get other people or at least allow other people to feel like they can be vulnerable in giving you some truth.
Either way, getting to a position of understanding that maybe there's something that you're doing that's causing people to not want to share, that's the part that you have to get to and then fix that piece.
What is it that you are doing again? Are you treating them like you've got all the answers that you know, everything that you know? You're the only smart one in the room.
Are you not treating them with dignity? Are you just treating them like a number? Is there any time in the past that they've tried to explain something to you or talk, you know, to you about something directly that they need fixed or whatever?
Or there's a problem and you just shoot it down, well, then that could be the reason. There's all kinds of reasons why. Most likely when somebody is not telling you the truth, there's a level of fear from their perspective.
Figure out what that fear is and ask yourself, how do you get rid of it? Right?
But if you convince somebody to be truthful with you and then you treat them like crap, I can promise you they will never be truthful with you ever again.
So, four empowering questions. Four difficult but fantastic questions. What am I pretending not to know? If I could solve only one problem in my business, what would it be?
What would my business look like if it were easy? And who is not telling me the truth and why?
Next-Level Leadership LIVE Event 2025 (00:31:15)
Are you a business owner or leader who's deeply passionate about what you do? You love your work, your team, your mission, but sometimes it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, doesn't it?
Let's talk honestly for a moment. You're passionate about your business and you've poured yourself into it. But you ever feel like everything depends on you?
That no matter what systems you have in place, the moment you step away, things start to slip? If that sounds like you the Next-Level Leadership LIVE 2025 is exactly what you need.
This isn't just another leadership seminar. It's a transformative three day experience happening April 2nd through the 4th, 2025.
Our goal is to equip you with practical, sustainable tools so you can confidently lead without feeling overwhelmed.
Now let's face it, trying to lead your team, grow your business and stay fully present for your family and personal life can feel nearly impossible. And if we're being honest, it's exhausting.
But here's the thing. You're not alone in this. I work with leaders every day who express the same frustrations.
They want their business to run smoothly, but the thought of stepping away is overwhelming. But here's what I want you to know. Leadership doesn't have to feel this way.
It doesn't have to be a constant drain on your time and energy. And at the Next-Level Leadership LIVE 2025, I'm going to show you exactly how to break out of this cycle. So why should you take the time to join us?
Well, here's what you'll gain from this experience.
First, we're going to teach you to lead smarter, not harder. This event is built on strategies that help you lead smarter, not harder.
You don't have to be the busiest person in your business to achieve real growth. In fact, I see so many leaders burning out simply because they're over involved.
One of the best outcomes I hear from attendees is that they walk away empowered to let their team succeed without micromanaging.
Second, reclaim your life outside of work. Here, we don't just talk about work life balance. We're going to help you create it. Imagine a life where you're fully present at home and in your business.
This is where you learn to lead without sacrificing your personal life.
Third, join a community of leaders who understand the people you'll meet here. They're facing the same challenges.
You'll be in a room full of leaders who understand exactly what you're going through.
This event fosters a genuine community where you'll find encouragement, fresh ideas, and maybe even lifelong friendships. Fourth, actionable takeaways you can implement right away.
This isn't just an event where you walk away with inspiration and no clear steps. At Next-Level Leadership LIVE, you'll leave with practical, actionable steps you can start implementing on day one, turning insights into immediate progress.
