131 | 8 Ways to Avoid Burnout

Burnout is more than just feeling tired—it’s a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion that can affect every area of your life. If you’ve ever felt drained, unmotivated, or like you’re running on empty, you’re not alone.

As a leader, business owner, or professional, burnout doesn’t just impact you—it affects your team, your business, and your relationships. Recognizing the warning signs and taking intentional steps to prevent burnout is crucial to long-term success and well-being.

Where Does Burnout Come From?

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It often builds up from prolonged stress, whether from work, family dynamics, or personal obligations. High achievers and business owners are especially prone to burnout because they often carry more responsibility and push themselves beyond healthy limits.

Instead of ignoring the signs, ask yourself:

  • When was the last time I truly rested?
  • Am I constantly saying “yes” when I should be saying “no”?
  • Do I feel weighed down by too much responsibility?
  • Am I letting controlling people dictate my time and energy?
  • Have I written down all my commitments to identify what’s unnecessary?
  • Am I prioritizing my physical and mental health?
  • Am I suffering from information overload?
  • Am I in control of my schedule, or is my calendar controlling me?

Burnout isn’t just about overwork—it’s about a lack of control over your time, energy, and priorities. By asking yourself these questions, you can start gaining clarity on what needs to change.

Ask the Right Questions

Avoiding burnout isn’t just about reducing workload—it’s about taking ownership of your time, energy, and mindset. Instead of making statements like “I’m too busy” or “I’m overwhelmed,” start asking better questions:

  • What’s one thing I can remove from my plate?
  • How can I create space to recharge?
  • What boundary do I need to set this week?
  • Who do I need to have a conversation with about my workload?

By shifting from reacting to proactively managing your well-being, you’ll be able to lead more effectively and avoid the exhaustion that so many leaders face.

“Are you suffering from information overload” resonated with me most. There is so much information available out there you can easily spend all of your time trying to prepare…without actually accomplishing anything. I have also found myself frustrated by my overly long reading list. I find myself hurrying through a book simply because I need to get to the next one. In the process I don’t glean what I could from the book I am reading. How many times have you read a book, been totally floored by it, and then never implementing what you read? yeah that has never happened to me either.

Recently the overload become too much. I deleted my Amazon wish list, removed all of my podcast subscriptions, and started from scratch on my RSS reader. Talk about lifting off some psychic weight.

  2. I so needed to hear this today – thank you! I’ve been trying to sprint a marathon (so to speak) and need to recharge. You inspired me to text a close friend to schedule a coffee date – a long chat with a great friend is sure to recharge my batteries.
