534 | What We Tell Married Couples

Welcome to The Chris LoCurto Show, where we discuss leadership and life, and discover that business is what you do, not who you are.

Today, we’re diving into the top advice we give to married couples—insights gained from over 10 years of Next-Level Life events, couples counseling, and personal experiences. Whether you’re in a great place or facing challenges, these three key areas can help you build a stronger, more fulfilling relationship.

1. You Don’t Know Your Spouse as Well as You Think

One of the most important things we tell couples is that you likely don’t know your spouse as well as you think. Yes, you’ve spent years together, but people change over time, and so do their desires, thoughts, and needs. If you assume you know everything about your spouse, you might miss out on crucial aspects of their current feelings and desires.

Keep learning about your spouse. Ask questions, be curious, and seek to understand their evolving perspectives. The more you know, the stronger your relationship will become. Remember, communication is key, and part of that is realizing that neither of you are mind readers.

2. Kill the Selfishness in Your Relationship

Selfishness is a silent killer in any relationship. It prevents you from loving and serving your spouse fully and effectively. We all have selfish tendencies, but the more you focus on yourself, the less you’re able to truly care for and love your spouse.

It’s crucial to recognize and address your own selfishness. When you prioritize serving your spouse and meeting their needs, you’ll notice a significant positive shift in your relationship. Remember, self-care is important, but it should never come at the cost of becoming self-centered.

3. Grow Together in God

The most important aspect of any marriage is growing together in your faith. A couple that pursues God together builds a foundation that can weather any storm. When you put God first in your marriage, you’ll naturally begin to serve and love each other better.

God’s love is sacrificial, and when you model that in your marriage, you’ll experience a deeper connection and a more fulfilling relationship. If you start with your own spiritual growth, even if your spouse isn’t on the same page yet, God will work in your relationship.

These three areas—continuing to learn about your spouse, eliminating selfishness, and growing together in God—are vital to building a strong and healthy marriage. Relationships are tough, but with intentional effort in these areas, they can also be incredibly rewarding.
