535 | What We Tell Ourselves

535 | What We Tell Ourselves

As leaders, we often find ourselves advising others, but what about the advice we give ourselves? After years of leading Next-Level Life events, counseling sessions, and practicing these principles in our own lives, I’ve compiled the top three things we constantly remind ourselves of.

These aren’t just things we tell others—they’re the core principles we use to guide our own lives and leadership.

Welcome to the Chris LoCurto Show, where we discuss leadership and life, understanding that business is what you do, not who you are. Today, I’m excited to dive into the top advice I find myself giving—to myself. These are the critical points that keep me grounded, focused, and effective as a leader.

1. Don’t Let Others Define Your Worth

The first thing I consistently ask myself is, “How am I allowing this person or situation to affect my worth?” In leadership, we encounter a range of emotions and reactions from others, especially when guiding people through difficult situations. Occasionally, someone may respond negatively, even attacking us as they struggle with their own issues. It’s vital to remember that your worth isn’t defined by how others perceive you or by the situations you find yourself in.

Your worth comes from God and His unwavering love for you. It’s easy to let external circumstances dictate how we feel about ourselves, but we must guard against this. When facing criticism or blame, check yourself first—did you do something wrong? If not, understand that the other person might be projecting their struggles onto you. Establish healthy boundaries and ensure you’re not emotionally handcuffed to the situation.

2. Avoid Taking On Unrealistic Expectations

The second question I ask myself is, “Am I taking on the unrealistic expectations of others?” It’s common to assume the burdens or expectations of those around us, whether we’re trying to please others, gain approval, or feel accepted. This often happens when we’re viewed as a leader or even as a father figure, a role I sometimes find myself in during Next-Level Life events.

When someone projects their expectations or struggles onto you, it’s crucial to assess the situation objectively. Ask yourself if what’s being expected of you is realistic or if it’s based on someone else’s issues. Healthy boundaries are essential here. By recognizing when you’re unfairly taking on others’ expectations, you can protect yourself and stay focused on your true responsibilities.

3. Serve God and Others With All Your Heart

Finally, the most important self-check I regularly perform is, “Am I busting it for God and the people He has given me to serve?” Our mission at Chris LoCurto is to worship God by loving people and guiding them to a greater perspective. This mission begins with ensuring that we are truly serving God in all that we do.

It’s easy to slip into selfishness, especially when facing difficult situations or manipulative behavior from others. But our focus must remain on serving God and His people, not on our own comfort or success. By constantly asking if we’re giving our all for God and those we’re called to serve, we can keep our hearts in the right place and our actions aligned with our purpose.

These three principles aren’t just advice—they’re daily practices that help me stay grounded and effective as a leader. I encourage you to reflect on these questions regularly:

Are you allowing others to define your worth?
Are you taking on unrealistic expectations?
Are you truly serving God and others with all your heart?
