17 | It’s Okay to be Selfish

During LifePlan, the topic of being selfish comes up all the time and it’s always an assumed no-no. Healthy selfishness is a vital piece of living a healthy life with boundaries. If you don’t have healthy boundaries in your life, a boundary that says “stop here” or “this is my limit,” you’ll get walked all over.

If you haven’t read Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, buy a copy today!

When you begin to start setting healthy boundaries at home and at work, it changes your life. Be selfish and get rid of junk so you can be the best version of yourself. Take time to unpack your past and get healthy. If you don’t get rid of the baggage in your life, you’ll continue to carry it around and pick up more along the way.

15 | You Get What You Give

https://soundcloud.com/chrislocurto/coffee-with-chris-you-get-what/s-KnhdU

This is the gift-giving time of year and there’s no greater blessing in life than to be a giver. Many of you are small business owners, entrepreneurs and team leaders but let me remind you – your business is what you do not who you are. When you make your business your life, you’re missing out on life. You’re sure not able to give of yourself either.

Colossians 3:12 – You must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

There’s only one way to clothe yourself with mercy and kindness and patience and that’s to take care of yourself. I’m not telling you to be selfish, but if you don’t take care of you, you don’t have anything else to give.

As you take time this holiday to step away from work, make sure that you’re scheduling time to replenish, exercise and create balance in your life. Going forward into the new year:

  • How are you going to replenish you?
  • What are the things you need to be doing to be the absolute best you?

When you do these things, you can pour yourself out into other people. You get what you give. Take care of yourself and help those around you be the best they can be.

Merry Christmas!

You’re No Good To Me!

If you’re like me, you have a tendency to work your Gluteus Maximus off to make your business the best it can possibly be. If so, then I know how tired you are right now.

I can tell you that after doing an incredible amount of events back-to-back, I’M TIRED! If there is one thing I have come to understand, it’s that I can’t continuously give out, without recharging ME.

If I don’t have energy to give to you, I’m no good to you. And the truth is, if you don’t have the energy to give to me, you’re no good to me either!

That’s why I decided to take a few days and go back home to do…wait for it…nothing! Yep. I finished my last event in a run of events, and flew straight to Tahoe.

I got into Reno, walked off the plane, got my bags, headed out the doors, and took one HUGE breath. I can’t tell you how incredible it is for me to fill my lungs up with that air. And it was even better when I got to Tahoe.

Over the next few days, I enjoyed coffee at the Coffee Bar in Truckee, had a killer workout, took a stretching class to try and work out some of my insanely tight muscles, had some incredible meals, and spent the rest of the time starting at the beauty in front of me.

And I praised God for sending me snow. Okay, maybe it wasn’t JUST for me, but I received it BIG time. I also answered an extremely small amount of emails or texts (sorry team!). Which is why I now have 500 to go through.

And while I believe I need more than just two days of this, I feel more rejuvenated than I have in a long time.

Why am I telling you about this trip? Because I’m pretty sure most of you are overdue for a trip just like this. Or doing something that regenerates YOU.

It’s the old bank analogy right? You can only take withdrawals if you have plenty of deposits. If you’re not putting deposits in your bank, you’re no good to me, your customers, your team, and mostly your family.

So it’s time! I want you to write down the top four things that absolutely regenerate you right now. Then I want you to pull out your calendar and book some of those things!

For me, spending time in Tahoe is on the top of my list, then alone time doing something relaxing, and cooking up a storm.

If I get some of those in, I can be a much better me. If not, I’m just a drained and empty version of the guy who’s supposed to be helping people.

Don’t be that person! It seems selfish to take time for you, but I promise, everyone around you will be much happier that you did.

Question: What refuels you?

You Are Good Enough [Video]

We finished up the Q&A Series a couple weeks ago and today we’re starting a new video series straight from your feedback on the reader survey! Thank you for the incredible questions, comments and ideas!

Do you ever struggle with the feeling that you haven’t achieved enough or accomplished enough? It’s not a question of “Am I good enough?” it’s an absolute feeling of “I am not good enough.” Clear it out of your mind. The truth is, YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH!

Take a few minutes and make three columns on a sheet of paper:

1st column: Write down every person or situation that has made you feel like you aren’t good enough. This will help you gain perspective on where the feelings came from. We’re not making monsters or victims.

2nd column: Write down everything you’ve achieved or accomplished in life. This is difficult. Take time to discover what these things are. We’re terrible at celebrating our victories.

3rd column: Write down a list of people that you’ve possibly made feel like they aren’t good enough. We’ve all done it. Pick out a few people that you’re going to talk to this week and let them know that they are good enough.

If you can never be satisfied with what you have achieved, you’ll never be satisfied with what you do achieve.

Today, come to a place of understanding that you are good enough!

Question: How have you affirmed or encouraged people on your team?

They Should Teach This In School!

In today’s post I answer a question from a podcast listener about personality styles!

Hi Chris. Thanks for the podcast. From your teaching, our team is reading “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. We’re exploring questions like the following:

  1. What are our collective strengths?
  2. What are we collectively passionate about?
  3. What services are demanded by the market that utilize our strengths and passion?

Please know we appreciate you, your team, and your teaching.

I had a quick question regarding personality styles. My wife is a college professor. We enjoy teaming up to support professional educators. Do you feel that the teaching of the DISC profile can help professional educators in high school or college?

Thanks for all you do! – Michael Prosario

Great question, Michael! First let me say Good to Great is VITAL for team wins and business growth! So good choice with that one.

As for understanding DISC helping teachers…
