What’s Keeping You From Being Great?

Some believe that greatness is defined by the response of the masses to a person or group. It is my belief that greatness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

I believe that greatness is not defined only by affecting great numbers of people, but by affecting even one life the right way can make you great.

As I teach and coach people across this country, I commonly find folks saying that they don’t know how to be great. I say this, if Tim can do it, so can you! You just need the RIGHT inspiration.

  1. (clears throat multiple times and says) I’m glad I’m in my office by myself right now. If that doesn’t bring a certain moistness to your eyes not much will… Thanks for sharing!

  2. Fear of being 98%.

If I can’t be the best, why try at all? That’s what I hear too often.

98%…not that I need to judge, but last time I checked, being better than 98% means I am in the top 2%. Achieving 98% of my goals every time is success. If I make 98% of my income goal every year, wow. It’s not like I am setting goals to barely make it.

But that 2% holds me back a lot. More than I like to admit.

I love that video Chris. That IS inspirational indeed. Way to go Tim!

  3. What else can I say here….that was way too cool!

The only thing holding me back is, pride, self pity, laziness, and fear. Ugh!

Nothing should be holding me back, clearly! Thanks for the reminder this morning!!!

  4. First: I’m sad you won’t be doing the Entreleadership podcast anymore, but I’m glad you’re still posting awesome stuff here!

Second: I’m held back by me. (Haha, aren’t we all?) I think that I’m held back by standards that are too high, or by thinking that I have to be different from who I am to be successful–personality-wise, strengths-wise, whatever. And I’m also held back by the fear of being successful. It’s more comfortable to do what I’ve always done because at least I know what will happen next. If I go out on a limb and try something different, that’s scary! I might fail, and then my poor, fragile ego might get bruised! It’s easier just to stay safe and mediocre.

Fortunately, I’ve had bursts in my life where I’ve learned to overcome that, or I wouldn’t be where I am today, but it still has a pretty strong grip on me a lot of times.

    1. Totally true Jaselyn, we stay where we are because we fear failure. I was watching a clip from a show called Celebrity Splash. (Famous folk who have no experience diving, get trained in a few days and compete with each other.) Anyway, one of the contestants said something interested as they prepped for a dive – I’m terrified about what I’m about to do – but if I don’t take risks, it’s game over for my career. (Not exactly word for word, but the idea is there.) No risk taking = no career.

    2. WHAT?? Chris not doing the Entreleadership podcast anymore? How do you know this? Why didn’t I know this? What else don’t I know? (prolly don’t want to know what else I don’t know. . .) Is someone else going to do it? Is Chris going to do something else?

Hmmmm, what is holding me back may be lack of information.

        1. Thanks, Leo. Intermittent internet means I am not keeping up. Maybe it will work tomorrow and I can listen while I work. I did hear CLo’s interview with Iron Jen and he mentioned that he was starting another business. Clearly I’m out of the information loop these days!

          1. It’s all good Jana, I know how that goes sometimes. I picked up on it during the interview with Iron Jen also and have been looking for an answer since. I’m glad it was discussed in the newest podcast because there was no mention of it on the last one.

          2. He went out on his own back in January, but there wasn’t much said until a couple weeks ago. He alluded to it on my podcast and on Jen’s, but he talkes more about it on Beyond the ToDo List. It was officially announced on the recent EL podcast

  5. Wow!!! What an ispiration, Chris! Thanks for posting this. I’m sharing it with my social network – which is basically all the people here, hehehe.

What’s keeping me from being great? Other fine folks here have said it, but I’m going to write it for myself to look at and read, and look at and read and look at and read…..well…you get the picture.

The thing keeping me from being great is ME, myself and I. Shame on them! No more holding back!!!

  6. WOW! OK first of all, you will be sorely missed on the Entreleadership podcast. I’m sure the “other Chris” will be great, but it’s hard letting go of the originator.

Second, this. Was. Amazing. I can hardly wait to share it with my volunteers, board members, and friends.

What’s holding me back? I always feel like I’m not doing enough, and so I push harder and take on more responsibility until I burn out. I am terrified of failure, so I will do whatever it takes to not fail. And that makes dealing with the times I do fail that much harder.

  7. I’m trying to find my excuse. I know I left around here somewhere. Apparently I can’t use one, then.

So, what’s stopping me. Well, besides staying busy looking for excuses, I guess I’m the only thing in the way. I’ll have smack myself around a little bit and get going.

I’d have to say that being good stops me from being great, too. I work hard and reach a certain level and then stop. Because I have arrived at the place of Good Enough.

I may have to watch this video when I wake up every day so I have no excuses.

  8. Wow! What a powerful video. What keeps me from being great? Probably…lack of confidence and lack of intentionality at times. Thanks for sharing this, Chris.

  9. Incredible. The only thing keeping me from being great is the space between my ears. As Steve Backlund says, our past doesn’t hold us back, our wrong beliefs do. May 2014 be the year of no more self-limitations.
